June 2010 --

August 2011

A nice short newsletter as half the members are on holiday or about to
go. I am off on holiday on Friday 12th for 2 weeks. Simon will be
holding the fort. Please help him by booking as many courts as possible
during that time and looking at the booking system for potential games.

Simon's availability is limited so please be aware that the court will
not be manned as much as normal. If you are first on in the morning
please make sure you have your key. If you don't have a key they are
available from us for a returnable deposit of £5.

Free Intro this Saturday

There is a free intro session booked in for Saturday from 1-3pm. At the
moment I have only one person booked on so if you know anybody who would
like to try the game please persuade them that Saturday would be a great
time to start. If they are golfers or false tennis players it'll
probably be raining anyway so late bookings can be taken.

Annual Dinner - September 24th

Bookings are being taken for the annual dinner on court at the end of
September. With players and guests we have over 40 people so far. We are
hoping to surpass sixty so get your names down asap. The list is in the
dedans. For those of you have never been it is a relaxed affair, dinner
is on court and Simon lights pretty candles and puts them in the dedans
& galleries. Hopefully no jackets will be severely burned this year.

Members can invite family and friends and you can book a table so you
are all together. Tables can sit 8-10.

Invitation Doubles

There are still a few places remaining for the invitation doubles. Let
me know if you would like to play.

there are six or more we will extend the time for an extra hour.

More information can be found at http://www.jdrtc.co.uk/page30.htm

If you know anyone who would like to sign up let me know asap.

I have hundreds of leaflets at the club so please feel free to take a
few and hand them out to friends, at work, in the pub or give to the
neighbours.

Invitation Doubles + Annual Dinner ? September 24th & 25th

The invitation doubles is one of the major events of the year. Guests
travel from across the country to team up with a Jesmond player. Last
year was won by John Taylor playing with Ian Steele. Their combined age
was over 110 and as John has assured me he is in his 30?s Ian was
exceptional for his age. Ian & John will be defending their title this
year.

I am beginning to take bookings for the 16 available places for Jesmond
members. There is a chance that there may be more places available as
the competition may be extended to the Friday if we have sufficient
players able to play on Friday. Sign up in the dedans or email ? you
need to let me know if there are any restrictions in your availability
on the Friday or Saturday. All players must be available on Sunday.

The main event of the weekend is the annual dinner on court. All
players will be expected to attend the dinner. Last year we had more
than 50 who enjoyed an excellent meal with the odd bottle of wine. The
format will be similar this year with complementary drinks form 7.30 and
bottles of wine available to buy with the meal and thereafter. There
will be tables of eight on court (or 10 close friends). Friends are
welcome and full tables can be reserved. Price is £25 per head.

Nikki Dowson will be catering.

We are looking for a sponsor for this event.

Summer Cup

The summer cup, as tradition demands, is a little behind schedule. But
not much. All the 2nd round matches have been organised. Please make
sure you play your 3rd round by August 15th.

The draw can be found at http://www.jdrtc.co.uk/page6.htm#93827

Summer Handicap Leagues

Lots of people have been playing games against someone in their league
and have not played it as a league game. Remember the big prize of a
couple of lessons for the winner across the leagues!

Events Diary 2011-2012

We have the fullest schedule I have ever seen for next year. We have 9
home matches and 6 away matches as well as Brodie Cup, Field Trophy and
our club competitions. Please have a look at the schedule and, if you
can play in any of the away fixtures let me know and we can start
planning ahead. The first away match is a double header at Newmarket &
Cambridge on October 8th & 9th. It is likely to be an overnight stay in
Newmarket as they are usually very good hosts.

Other away matches are:

Nov 2nd ? midweek jaunt to Bristol (need to book up as early as possible
for the cheap flights)
March 4th ? Manchester. This could be a day trip or a full weekend
April 14th/15th ? Leamington (tbc) & Moreton Morrell

New Database

We are testing out a new invoicing and contact database. This email has
been sent using the new system. We are testing the invoicing side this
month and will hopefully be using it for all accounts from September.
Or we may even be daring and try in August. Please let us know if there
are any problems at your end.

As part of ensuring that our information is correct I will send out an
email asking you to check your details and add those that are missing.

Holidays

I am on holiday from Friday August 12th for two weeks. Please make an
extra effort during that time to help Simon by booking courts and

June 2011

Juniors' Summer Club

I am starting a Juniors' Summer Club that will run during the summer
holidays. This will offer the chance to play for 2 hours per day throughout
the week and be able to play the game and know the rules by the end of the
week. I am hoping for a minimum of 4 & a maximum of 8 players each week
playing between 2-4pm each day.

More information can be found at http://www.jdrtc.co.uk/page30.htm

I am following the junior coaching methods of Seacourt who have been the
most prolific club in coaching juniors.

I have ordered some leaflets to advertise this so if anyone can help to
distribute in schools it would be greatly appreciated. I know we have a few
school governors and teachers in our membership so please let me know if you
can help.

Winter Leagues

After 6 months the league title was finally decided. Jane Hayes had been in
the lead for the last two months but was pipped at the post by Simon
Johnston who won all his league games this month in one busy week. Jane &
Martin Kellaway were runners-up. The winter league will start again in
September.

Congratulations to Simon who wins a racquet for his efforts.

Summer leagues

During June, July & August we will be running a Summer Handicap League.
There will be up to 10 players in each league with a maximum of 30 points
available. The format is first to 10 or the score after the hour. Played
off full handicap (no deuces).

Win 3 points
Draw 2 points
Loss 1 point

The Summer league winner will receive two free lessons.

The summer league can be found on the website at
http://www.jdrtc.co.uk/page6.htm#95384.

David Lloyd

I have been talking to the David Lloyd Club about some mutual membership
offers to attract their members down here to try the game. They have
offered our members the following:

· Free entry to use the café at any time.
· Half price day passes (£7) for limited periods during the year

Although the logistics of this have not been finalised they will be sending
me some vouchers so simply collect a voucher from me. The vouchers for the
café can be used repeatedly. The half price pass will be limited. I hope
you can make good use of this offer.

In return we are offering free introductory sessions to groups of their
members.

April 2011

Royal Wedding =96 Friday 29th April
The parking area will be closed all day for a street party. I think the
average age of the participants will be about 2-3. The court will be
open
as usual but please remember to close the top gate properly.
As it=92s an extra day off, if anyone would like to play in a handicap
doubles
tournament let me know. We could play for the William & Kate mug

Leagues
Congratulations to John Duns for winning all of his league games and
scoring
9 points. Others managed the same number of points but games difference
was
worse. John is having his free lesson tomorrow.

Only 2 months are left to win the racquet. Current leader is still Jane
Hayes with 27 points. John Duns & Martin Kellaway are in hot pursuit on
23
with Mark Turner on 22 (work trips abroad not helping this months
score).

http://www.jdrtc.co.uk/page6.htm#64690

Please organise your games asap.

Club Racquets =96 a message from the committee

It has come to the attention of the committee that the number and
standard
of club racquets has been falling for some time. Over £400 worth of
club
racquets were supplied last year and these were for the sole use of
beginners, prior to purchasing their own racquet. Over the past year
over
£100 has been spent on repairing these club racquets.

The committee would like to remind members that they are responsible for
buying their own racquets and should not be using club racquets or any
other
racquets that they do not own. There is a £5 per hour hire fee for
club
racquets. This will be implemented in full from this point forward.
Please
make sure that you pay the hire fee at the time of playing. These fees
will
be used to supply more club racquets for the future.

The University racquets are for the sole use of Newcastle & Durham
students
who have paid for them.

Thank you for your understanding

_____

The Williamson=92s Cup

We had 32 entrants into this annual match which is kindly sponsored by
Williamsons Solicitors (Alan Douglas). With each game being timed at 30
minutes it is a cut throat affair with winners and losers often decided by
single points. James Penn sneaked through his league with a 5-4 win
over
Peter Quinn and Peter remembers the two points he had to win. Vikki =
Leitch
was 5-2 down against Jeremy Freedman with 10 minutes to go and still 6-5
down with 10 seconds on the clock. Oh for a chase when you need one!
Jeremy was distraught.

Last years winner, Fiona Harrison, reached the semi-final again. At
7-7,
40-40 she finally succumbed to Ben Stothard. However, such a close game
had
cost Ben too much energy and the legs were a little weary. James Penn
had
been improving all tournament and his controlled play was too much for
Ben.
I think it may have helped that he played with a racquet that had won
the
tournament 2 years earlier (thanks to Ben Turner for generously and
unknowingly supplying the racquet).

Williamsons Handicap Singles - March 30th - April 3rd

One of the premier handicap tournaments of the year is less than a month
away. Already there have been some strange results as players try to
favourably alter their handicaps. Luckily Simon checks all of these and
deletes the results of anything he finds suspicious.

March leagues

Out of 33 league games played in February, ten of them were either 10/8 or
10/9. There have been some excellent games and some interesting results.

The runaway winner this month is Mark Turner who won all of his games. He
receives a free lesson.

Due to injuries, babies, work and other such obstructions there were a few
disappointing leagues but I hope that will improve in March when we're going
for 80% of league games to be played.

See March leagues at http://www.jdrtc.co.uk/page6.htm#64690

The overall lead for The Race for the Racquet is jointly held by Mark Turner
& Jane Hayes with 21 points.

Hotel Smart

The IRTPA (Real tennis Professionals Association) has linked up with Hotel
Smart to offer discounted rates to tennis players. Hotel accommodation can
be very expensive and even for those who do not count their pennies or cents
you now have the opportunity of supporting the professionals, without any
cost to you!

Hotel Smart has become an Affiliate Partner of the IRTPA.

What does that mean? For any hotel booking made via HOTELSmart's link on
the IRTPA home page The IRTPA will receive a commission from HOTELSmart.
The booking though has to be made via the web site click through in order
for the IRTPA to benefit. If you go direct to HOTELSmart, your booking is
untraceable in their account.

www.irtpa.com

I have also put a link on our home page.

I have tried the site and have booked for a trip to Radley. The rates were
excellent and although I am paying the same as my original booking, I am
staying in a much better hotel. I have also checked for hotels in Jesmond
and the prices are well below those offered when phoned direct.

Please try and use the site for any hotel bookings when venturing out of
Newcastle and you will be helping the Professionals.

February 2011

February Leagues

The new leagues have been posted at http://www.jdrtc.co.uk/page6.htm#64690

Congratulations to Martin Kellaway for being the January league winner with
3 good wins.  He receives a free lesson.

In the overall standings Jane Hayes is in the lead with 13 points.

Jesmond Dene Cup - February 12th & 13th

The Jesmond Dene Cup is our primary invitation singles tournament.

This year there are 3 guests from Manchester, Hampton & Prested Hall. Simon Barker, the champion for the last three years is back to defend his title.

A number of club players and myself will be trying to win the cup for
Jesmond.

There will also be a level doubles tournament taking place all weekend in
between the singles matches. The draw will be on the website today or
tomorrow.
The finals will be on Sunday afternoon. Finals are always better with a
full gallery so please come down and give the place some atmosphere. The
bar will be open (not in the free sense of course) so come and have a few
drinks and enjoy some good tennis.

Match v Prested Hall (A) - March 12th & 13th
This is now an annual fixture alternating home and away. This year we are
travelling. This trip is reserved for the higher handicappers and last time
it was over 60 handicaps but I think this time we will make it 55'ish and
over.

The trip usually involves a flight to Stanstead and a hire car but can
equally be done by train. Prested can sometimes host or they may offer
rooms in the hall and there are hotels close by.

If you would like to play please let me know and I can start arranging the
match with the match manager (Jane???). We can take up to seven players and
probably need to book in the next week or two to ensure the flights are
affordable.

New members are welcome.

Lost trainers
And now for the most important point:

A pair of my trainers has gone missing. I presume they have been scooped
into someone's bag. Could you have a look - they have PH written on the
back.
The lost property box seems to be filling up. Can you have a look to see if
anything belongs to you.

Club Doubles - The Result

Five pairs entered the level doubles championship on Sunday.  There were some very close games (and others not so close).  Two pairs remained undefeated and went on to contest the final.  John Duns & Michael Raven played steadily and were worthy winners against Alan Douglas & Martin Kellaway.

A special mention for Ben Stothard & Chris Banthorpe who entered the competition in preparation for the defence of their handicap doubles crown in a fortnight.  They lost their first match 8-0 but showed determination to improve and be competitive and managed to make a couple of teams look a little nervous.

January Leagues

The new leagues appear to have been received enthusiastically.  Christmas, student holidays & injuries tried hard to slow the momentum but I was pleased to see that more people played more league games than in any month over the last 2 years.  Well done!

Congratulations to Andrew Cole for being the first league winner with 10 points.  He receives a free lesson.  He is also the leader in the Race to the Racquet so book your league games and see if you can catch him.

The January leagues are up and running and can be found at http://www.jdrtc.co.uk/page6.htm#64690 along with the points table.

Level Doubles - January 9th

The club doubles takes place this Sunday.  This is usually a fun event and should be quite entertaining.  Come and have a beer and heckle support the players.

Results

Club Championship - Congratulations to Richard MacAlister for being crowned club champion.  He has been trying for a few years and has finally done it.  Jack Walker  started strongly and took the first set 6/4 and, he will not like me mentioning, had a couple of match points at 5/4 in the second.  Richard never gives up and after scraping through the second 6/5 went on to dominate the final set.

Full results at http://www.jdrtc.co.uk/page6.htm#79774

Ringtons Handicap Singles - as sponsor Colin Smith came out of injury-enforced retirement to play again this year and much to his amazement won his group to reach the quarter finals.  Hopefully we will see him on court again soo!  Alan Douglas overcame problems with his knees to reach another handicap final.  However, the form player of the tournament was James Windsor-Clive who, despite his handicap being manually altered from 50 to 40 over the previous weeks continued his huge improvement and won all his games.  He even beat both Harrisons in the quarters and semis.

Full results at http://www.jdrtc.co.uk/page6.htm#77096

Congratulations to Adam Curran for winning the Summer Handicap Cup.  He had a few close calls on the way through with two results of 10/9.  He played Darren Spurling in the final and at 8/8 it was difficult to call.  Darren's natural dislike of being the owing player curbed his enthusiasm for the final but he put up a great fight.  Adam's handicap has been lowered to 58.

Full results at http://www.jdrtc.co.uk/page6.htm#67460

Christmas Handicap Doubles - Simon Johnston & Keith Anderson won their final group game 6/5 to sneak through to the semis.  From there they played very well and won the final 8/4 against Gordon Stanger-Leathes & Chris Handley.  A special mention for Ben Turner & James Penn who could have won their league game against the winners if they had left a chase, tied their laces or won one more point to waste the ten seconds they needed!!!

Christmas Handicap Doubles

The annual Christmas doubles is scheduled to take place on Wednesday December 29th.  As the Christmas period is difficult to plan it is possible that this date could change if there was sufficient demand for the 28th or 30th.  There is a sign up sheet in the dedans so choose your partner and sign up.  If you don't have a partner just add your name and I'll find you a partner around your handicap.  This is open to players of any handicap.

Depending on numbers each pair should play at least 3 games before the semi & final.

Ringtons Handicap Singles

James Windsor-Clive beat Alan Douglas in the final.  James was a 45 handicapper two weeks ago, was reduced to 40 for the tournament and will be 35 from today.  He will be able to represent Jesmond in the Chetwood Trophy next year at Hampton if he is available.

Results can be seen at http://www.jdrtc.co.uk/page6.htm#77096

Thanks to Colin & Amanda Smith for sponsoring the event through Ringtons and making sure the dedans was full and loud for the two finals.  Thanks to Fiona Harrison for helping Amanda to organise a lovely lunch.

Club Singles Championship

After a few years of challenging for the title Richard MacAlister is now club champion.  He has been off games for 6 months due to an injury and forced himself back for this competition.  He may have been helped by the withdrawal of John Duns with a football injury but he was tested in both the semis and the final.

In the first semi, Jack Walker played Paul Reading.  Unfortunately neither of them played their best and Paul allowed Jack to win some of the crucial points.

In the second semi Chris Gerber played exceptionally well to take the first set easily with Mac having no answer to his consistency and accuracy.  In the second set Mac upped his game and Chris couldn't quite maintain such high standards losing it 6/4 although Chris had opportunities.  Richard continued to improve in the third set and was retrieving everything.

In the group games Richard & Jack had drawn 9/9 so we knew the match would be close.  Jack stormed off in the first set with thoughtful and strategic tennis winning 6/4.  The second set was closer but Jack was looking the more likely winner.  When he went 5/4 up I thought he had the match sewn up but Mac never gives up.  Jack had 3 match points but couldn't finish it and Richard won the set 6/5.  In the third Richard's experience and determination began to dominate and he finally won the singles championship after a few years of trying.

September 2010

The Floor

There have been one or two problems with the floor renovation which has led to extra work being required.  This work has been completed and the court will re-open on Thursday at 12.  There is likely to be discoloured patches but these should blend in over the next week.

There are also some repairs to be done to the net and this should be completed by early next week.  Thank you for your patience in this matter and hopefully everything will be back to normal very soon.

Invitation Doubles - September 25th & 26th &

Annual Dinner - September 25th, 7.30 - late

Only 4 weeks to go until the invitation doubles and the annual dinner on court.  We still need 6 more players to make up the playing numbers.  Please let Simon know if you can play.

The dinner on court will be on Saturday evening starting with drinks at 7.30.  We need to start finalising numbers so let us know if you would like to attend.  Please remember that partners and guests are positively encouraged and we are hoping that the numbers will be in excess of 60 this year.  If you would like to book a whole table (8) please let us know.

Match v Bristol - Thursday Sept 30th

Due to an injury to the match manager this away match has been rather neglected.  The plan is for a team of 4 players to fly down at 7am, play a singles and a doubles, drink some beer, eat some food and return on the 9pm flight.  We have made this trip twice in the last year and it is an excellent away day.

The cost of the flight are around £45 but we'll need to get these booked up sonn before the price increases.

Please let Paul know if you would like to play.

Match v Old Rugbeians - Sunday October 3rd

A relaxed affair with a pleasant lunch, a glass of wine and some very competitive singles and doubles.  I will try and match your handicap to that of your opponent.  The OR team normall consists of Maynard Hall (65), James Talks (55), Angus Crichton-Miller (48), Alex Todrick (45) and me (14).

Let me know if you would like to play.

August 2010

Court Closure - 12th - 22nd

The court will close on Thursday 12th August for 11 days and will re-open on Monday August 23rd.  Work to be carried out includes:
  • Floor to be prepared and painted
  • Dedans to be repaired and painted
  • New bulbs fitted in main lights and side lights
  • Metal window grills repaired
  • A few repairs to court walls
The closure will coincide with my annual holidays which start on Saturday 7th.  Simon will be site manager.

Please don't forget to book your courts for the following week to check out the new floor.

Booking System

The online booking system has been operating since June last year and appears to be successful.  Since that time we have operated a manual system as well but it is time now to move over completely.  The paper system will cease to exist after the court closure.

This does not mean that you can only book online.  You can still phone, leave messages, email and text us and we will book the courts as we normally do.

The computer in the dedans is there primarily for members to use the online booking system and to view the bookings.  For this there is a read-only screen so you can see the bookings for the next week.  If you want to make a booking you will have to login to your account.

If you cannot access your account please let us know and we will help.

The automatic passwords that are issued can be changed.  To do this you need to log on to your account at www.realtennisonline.com/rto - go to ACCOUNT and change the password in the Account Details which is the first section.  This will change your password for the booking system as well.

Invitation Doubles - Sept 25th & 26th & Annual Dinner

This handicap doubles event is becoming more popular each year and we already have a full complement of 16 guests booked for the event.  Each guest plays with a home player of similar handicap.  We have 8 Jesmond players already so please let Simon know asap if you would like to play.

The annual dinner takes place on court on the evening of the 25th.  It is presumed that all participants will be attending the dinner.  EVERYONE is welcome to the dinner.  This includes members, guests, potential members and interested parties.  Why not book a table and bring a group of friends?  We hope to have over 60 people this year.

There will be sign up sheets in the dedans for both the doubles and the meal (just phone or email and we will add you to the list) - you can see this online at http://www.jdrtc.co.uk/page6.htm#69829

Newcastle Activity Week - Real Tennis

If you would like to book a place for your kids can you let us know.

July 2010

Summer Cup

The Summer Cup has started in earnest and there are only a few first round matches yet to be played.  The deadline for the second round matches is August 9th so try and get the games played as early as possible due to the holiday season.

Court Maintenance & Closure

The court will be closed from Thurday August 12th and will re-open on Monday August 23rd.  In that time the floor will undergo a complete refurbishment, new bulbs will be fitted, the penthouse will be repaired and painted and a few other minor repairs will be completed.  Although the floor was repainted 5 years ago it is now showing signs of wear.  This time the existing paint will be removed and the three coats that will be put on should help smooth out some of the inconsistencies in the floor but, hopefully, retain a similar bounce to now.

I am on holiday during that 2 week period, starting August 7th, and Simon has agreed to be project manager as well as re-paint the chase lines when the floor has been completed.

Invitation Doubles - September 25th & 26th + The Annual Dinner

The invitations have gone and we already have 8 guests committed to playing.  Totals needed are 16 guests and 16 Jesmond players.  As there are limited places we are taking bookings now so please let Simon know if you would like to play.  It will be assumed that all players will be attending the dinner.

The dinner on Saturday 25th is open to all members and their guests.  We aim to have over 50 people dining on court.  Please put it in your diary and invite a few friends.  The cost of the dinner is usually around £25 per person, not including drinks.

Match v Manchester - Saturday 11th September

This is the first match of the season and is being managed by Martin Kellaway.  The plan at the moment is quite flexible and will reflect the wishes of the players.  The options are to be there and back in a day or to stay overnight and see the bright lights of Manchester.  If you would like to play could you contact Martin - Martin.Kellaway@cwvgroup.com

The events diary for next season can be found at http://www.jdrtc.co.uk/page3.htm if you would like to plan your Real tennis year!

New Furniture

You may have noticed a rather splendid dresser in the corridor that now holds all the glasses and crockery.  Thank you to Michael Howard for donating this extremely heavy piece of wood.  Thanks also to Tony Harrison who assisted with the removals.  My back is still in spasms and Simon and I have decided that removals is not part of our future.

New members

Welcome to Richard Sanderson who has joined the club this month.

We are still on our membership drive.  If you know of anyone who may want to try the game, all introductory sessions are free whether people come as a group or as individuals.  These sessions are often on Thursday evenings but can be arranged at any time to suit.

June 2010

Summer Cup (Holder: Sam Turner)

The draw for this years handicap knockout tournament has been made and can be found in the dedans or at http://www.jdrtc.co.uk/page6.htm#67460  It is sometimes difficult to limit this to 64 players so if we have missed you out and you would like to play please let us know as there may already have been an injury to one of the participants.

Simon & Paul are happy to help to arrange the games but can the player first on the list please take responsibility for arranging the match.  Remember that contact numbers can be found on the website in the members section.  The password is the same as the door code.

Williamsons Cup

Congratulations to Fiona Harrison for winning the Williamsons Handicap Singles.  There were a lot of very close games for everyone with single games often deciding who would progress through the draw.  Fiona really upped her game in the semi-final to beat her husband.  Colin Smith fought through injuries to beat Mark Squires in the other semi.  The final went down to the wire at 9-9 but Colin was destined to be the losing finalist for the second year running.

The full results can be found at http://www.jdrtc.co.uk/page30.htm

Introductory sessions

Thanks to everyone who has helped to send people for these sessions.  I have added an extra open intro session on Thursday July 8th so if you know anyone who may be interested in trying out the game that would be a good opportunity.  It is free.  Let me know so I can keep a track of numbers.

Fixtures 2010/2011

Please have a look at the fixtures list for next year and perhaps even add one or two of them into your diary - http://www.jdrtc.co.uk/page3.htm.  There is an away match v Bristol to be added when the date has been confirmed.  I believe the trip to Queens already has a full complement of players.  The date for the Manchester match may change.

If you would like to play in any of the other matches let me know and I will pencil you in.

I am still looking for 3 match managers for the following fixtures so let me know if you are willing to volunteer.  The work involved prior to the trip is minimal and we will help as much as we can.

Oct 10th v Newmarket (a)
Nov 6th v Radley (a) - date to be confirmed.
April 10th v Morelton Morrell (h)
