Club Handicap Doubles - Saturday 23rd January & Sunday 24th January

Holders:  Ben Turner & James Penn

3 or 4 groups of 4 teams (depending on numbers).  Group times are :  Sat10-1pm, Sat 1-4pm, Sun10-1pm, Sunday 1-4pm.  Semis and finals to be played from 4pm on Sunday.

Choose your own partner or put your name down and we will find a suitable partner.  ALL HANDICAPS WELCOME.  Email to ensure your place in your preferred group.

Club Championship Doubles - Sunday January 19th

********  Please note that this date has been changed from the Saturday **********

Played off level and restricted to handicaps below 40.  Choose your own partner or put your name down and we will find you a suitable partner.

Format to be decided depending on numbers.

Heating

The new boiler has been installed and appears to be so efficient that people are complaining about the sauna-like conditions in the changing rooms.  Simon is playing with the NASA-designed controls and hopes to find a suitable setting that will reduce the heat in the changing rooms and maintain a pleasant temperature in the dedans.

New shirts

The new shirts will be arriving on Wednesday, a little later than planned but just in time to tell your loved ones in time for Christmas.  They will be similar to the T&RA centenary shirts with the club colours on the front collar and the logo as normal.  They are made of cotton so are a lot more flattering than the breathable material.

Payments for racquets & clothes

Please remember that these are no longer billed and you must pay for these separately.  Cheques payable to Paul Hetherington or cash.  I'm afraid I can't accept cards although online bank payments are possible.

As more and more people appear to be taking clothes home to try on it is becoming more and more difficult to keep track of what has been taken and what has been paid for.  Please could you make sure that you take responsibility to ensure that payment is made.

Match Managers

I am looking for 2 or 3 members who are willing to arrange matches against other clubs.  My hope is that we have one match each year and that we alternate home and away.  The match managers will be able to choose which club they would like to play against and I will help as much as possible.  Clubs that would be interersted in a match would be - Manchester (probably a home and away each year), Bristol (H & A each year due to easy flights), Holyport, Queens, Hampton Court, Cambridge, Oxford & Radley in one weekend.

It doesn't take a great deal of time to organise a match but it does need a separate match manager for it to be successful.  The manager can suggest dates, handicap restrictions, numbers etc.

I hope you all have a merry Christmas and don't forget the court is not heavily booked so short notice games will always be available.

November

Heating

Some of the Southerners amongst you may have noticed a slight chill in the
air at the club.  Our boiler is no longer functioning and we are in
time-consuming negotiations (11 months and counting) with the council on a
replacement.  It is hoped that the new boiler will be installed next week
and we have been promised that everything will be working no later than
November 20th.

We do have temporary measures in place so it shouldn't be too bad.  The
problem with the temporary measures are that they do not switch on and off
automatically.  If you happen to be last on court could you make sure that
the gas fire in the dedans is switched off (small lever at back) and the
electric heater in the changing rooms is switched off at the mains.

Upcoming events

Nov 22nd - Brodie Cup & Field Trophy

Field Trophy are away at Oxford.

Brodie team are at home to the winners of Oxford & Middlesex.  Tickets to
this event are free and all supporters will be warmly welcomed.  The Brodie
team have reached the final in two of the last three years so we are hoping
they will continue their success.

Nov 24th - Match v Holyport

Taking place all day Tuesday and will be a mixture of singles and doubles
with full handicaps.  If you would like to play please sign up in the dedans
or let us know by phone or email

Nov 29th - Match v Old Rugbeians

This annual match is a mixture of singles and doubles, a good lunch, the odd
glass of wine and possibly a night out on the Saturday (optional).  Let us
know if you would like to play.

Various dates - Club singles Championship (Holder: John Duns)

If you have a handicap of around 40 or better you can enter the club singles
championship.  The draw will be organised next week and the final will be
held  on December 6th after the Rington's handicap singles final.

Dec 2nd - 6th - Rington's Club Handicap Singles (Holder: Tony Harrison)

One of the biggest competitions of the year, the handicap singles is
sponsored by Ringtons.  The draw is limited to 32 players and the group
games take place on: Wed 2nd pm, Thu 3rd pm, Fri 4th pm, Sat 5th am and pm,
and Sun 6th am. Quarters, Semis and Final will take place between 12 & 4pm
on Sunday.

Add your name to the list in the dedans or email with your preferred time.

The Sunday of the tournament is hosted and catered by Rington's who put on a
good spread and there is always a great atmosphere.  Even if you aren't
playing you are welcome to come and watch, eat & drink.  The club singles
final will take place after the handicap, final (about 4-4.30).

Attracting new members

We would like to start introductory evenings again.  This generally involves
a member getting a group together and I will give them all an introductory
lesson.  In the past we have had intro evenings for individual companies, a
group from the same profession or a disparate group of friends.  We already
have someone who will be bringing down a group of lawyers.  Other
suggestions would be surgeons, accountants, university lecturers, housewives
etc.

We are hoping to hold one such evening each month.  If you would like to
organise an evening please let me know and we can plan dates etc.

AGM

The Agm will be held on Monday November 16th at 7pm.  All members welcome.
If you are likely to attend can you let us know so we can organise seating.
If you have a particular subject you would like to raise let us know and we
will add it to the AOB.

Cancellation policy

A court must be cancelled by 10am the day before the booking to give
sufficient time to find a replacement.  Any court cancelled after this time
will be charged at the full half-court rate.  If a court is cancelled after
this time and the booking has to be cancelled, the charge will be for the
whole court.  If a booking is cancelled after this time and the place is
made up by a non-paying player (e.g. professional) the charge will be for
the whole court.

September

Court renovations

While I took a strategic holiday last week the council arranged for a large
crack in the wall to be pinned.  Apparently there was a small amount of dust
and dirt from the work which Simon dealt with stoically.

At the same time Simon decided that the floor was looking a bit mucky and
decided to spend the whole week on his knees scrubbing it clean.  To fully
appreciate the difference you needed to see the cleaned areas next to the
uncleaned ones but I assure you the difference is significant and it looks
fantastic.  To maintain this can people please make sure that they do not
play in shoes that have been worn outside (even from the car).  Small stones
easily lodge in the treads and can damage the floor.

Parts of the court have also been painted during the closure.

Invitation Doubles - Sept 26th & 27th

This annual event is becoming popular for the visiting players.  This year
we have 16 guests which is the maximum possible.  Each guest will be paired
with a Jesmond player.  At the moment we have 13 Jesmond players signed up
so need 3 more players.  The guests without partners have handicaps of 36,
42 & 44.  As we try and have partners of similar handicaps, if you are
within 10 points of those handicaps and can play can you let me know asap.

I have put the leagues and order of play on the website, although this can
change depending on who takes up the remaining places - www.jdrtc.co.uk

Annual Dinner

You are all cordially invited to the club's annual dinner to be held on
Saturday September 26th at 7.30.  The dinner will be on court and will be
priced at £25 per person.  Drinks will be available separately.

Partners & friends are encouraged.

At present we have almost 50 people coming and it would be good if we could
break 60, or even 70.  Please book your place(s) as soon as possible so we
can confirm numbers with the caterer.

Summer Handicap Cup

This competition has reached the quarter-final stage and has included some
very close matches.

Wayne Halton beat John Taylor 10-9
Eric Wilkins and Carol English drew 9-9.  The first re-match was on the
cards until Carol was advised to take a 2 week rest due to a niggling
injury.
Sam Turner beat Tony Harrison 10-8
Diana Halbert beat Anthony Coon 10-8
Fiona Harrison beat Peter Gordon 10-9

Quarter-final line up is:

Wayne Halton v Ramy Zack
Michael Malone v Eric Wilkins
Sam Turner v Diana Halbert
Chris Clarke v Fiona Harrison

Match v Bristol - September 29th

Bristol are sending up a team to play a friendly on Tuesday 29th.  They have
limited time but will probably be playing between 10-3pm.  Handicaps range
from 44-60 and there will be singles and doubles.  If you would like to play
please sign up in the dedans or let us know.

Leagues

The new leagues are up and will revert to the monthly format.  If you would
like the email address or phone numbers of people in your league send us an

The Real Ride

As mentioned in the last missive there are a number or real tennis pros
doing a sponsored bike ride next week.  They are starting at Jesmond and
ending up at Seacourt.  Thanks to those of you who have offered them beds
for the Sunday night.  They are hoping to stay locally (unsure of starting
time on Monday) and are still looking for another 2 beds so please let me
know if you are able to help.

They are all riding for their chosen charities.  Nick Wood is raising money
for the Parkinson's Disease Societyand if you would like to sponsor him go
to HERE
<http://www.justgiving.com/nickwood14/?pid=1843964&dtpn=1#DonationTable>
He needs another £1500 to reach his target so any help at all would be
appreciated.

Rules

Service

Sometimes, if the serve is hit hard, the second bounce (first bounce must be
in the service area) can land within the hazard area.  If this happens it
becomes a hazard chase.  If you are playing off a chase this will win the
chase.  If the first bounce is within the hazard area it is a fault.

If the service hits the edge of the penthouse without first hitting either
the side penthouse or the service wall, it is a fault.  If it has hit either
the wall or the penthouse (service side or receiver's side) and touches the
edge of the penthouse on the way down, the serve is good.

History

Why do we call it a rest, reste or wrest?  There are various theories or
explanations for this.

Theory 1:  First there was the service, which used to be carried out by a
servant, and then there was the rest (of the rally), played by the principal
players.
Theory 2: If the ball went back and forth many times, the servant, who was
perched in the dedans after serving the ball, got to "rest"
Theory 3: wrest- when the ball went back and forth quite a few times, the
players were said to have had a good "wrest" as in wrestle

I think I prefer Theory 1.

Great North Run

The Children's Foundation have a few places left for anyone willing to run
on their behalf in the Great North Run.  The deadline is July 6th.  If
you're interested let us know and I will forward the appropriate information
to you.

June

Summer Handicap deadline

June 22nd is the deadline for playing your first round match in the summer handicap cup.

Some interesting results so far include:  With a handicap difference of 50, Chris Gerber, looking smug, leading Caroline Gosnay 8-6 with 3 minutes remaining.  8-8 with one minute remaining.  40-40.  Not so smug at this point but, surprisingly, he held his nerve and forced the error from Caroline.

Court Damage

The damage to the bandeau at the service end is becoming worse.  It is caused by players striking the penthouse or bandeau as part of their service action.  If you are one of the culprits could you please make sure you change your serve as repairing the damage, if it worsens, may be quite expensive and mean the court will have to be closed.  Thanks for your help and understanding with this.

Leagues

If you want to join the leagues for July please let us know by June 25th

Rules

Over the next few months I would like to point out some rules that may be misinterpreted or unknown.

The net post (by the door) is out regardless of where the ball bounces to after striking the post.

Serving in doubles - At the beginning of each set the servers can choose who they would like to serve (regardless of who served the last game of the previous set).  The receivers can then select the player to receive.

Massage

Before this morning the last time I had a massage was in 1986 on a beach in Greece when two masseuses told me my back was too tough to manipulate.  Age must have softened it slightly.  This morning I sat in the dedans on a very
clever massage chair while Suzanne Burns (http://www.holistic-hr.co.uk/) demonstrated her 12 minute massage.  Suzanne has set up her own business going into the workplace (or real tennis club) offering stress and knot-relieving massages for as little as £10 per person.

I thought there may be a few people interested in this so we are going to set up a couple of dates in the next month where you can book a massage with Suzanne.  The initial dates I am thinking of are Wednesday 17th  June 11.30 at 1pm and Tuesday 23rd June 17.30 at 19.00.  If you are interested in booking a 15 minute slot can you let me know your preferred time.

Computer

As you may have noticed there is a new computer on the pro's desk.  This has full broadband access to the internet and is there for the use of the members.  For free, of course.  It is hoped that in the future we will move to an online booking system and this will be the main access point in the club.

Exhibition match

Thanks to everyone who turned up to see Rob Fahey play Jamie Douglas.  I hope you all enjoyed the match.  Thanks also to Alan Douglas for sponsoring the event (Fahey is expensive), inviting Rob in the first place, fathering his opponent and also providing accommodation.

May

Exhibition Match & new members

As you probably know, the exhibition match on May 23rd features Rob Fahey, the world champion, and Jamie Douglas, the UK amateur champion.  A fun doubles will precede the main singles event.  We would like to use this
match to introduce the game to potential new members.  If you bring one or more guests who you think may be interested in the game, and pass their contact details to Paul, there will be no charge for your ticket(s) or those of your guests if your guest subsequently takes up an intro lesson.

The club needs to attract a few new members so we hope that this will be a good opportunity to bring along friends, work colleagues or anyone you think would be interested in seeing the game.  This, of course, includes students bringing first or second years who may be interested in playing next year.

There will be a buffet after the exhibition match.  We know that people may have plans on a Saturday night at this time so if you will NOT be staying for the buffet please let us know so we can try and control the catering costs.  If you do not have the buffet a contribution towards Guide Dogs will be made in lieu.

There will be a cash bar for the first part of the night when it will return to an honesty bar.  People are invited to stay here as long as they want after the event.

Potential new members

We have tried a number of ways of introducing new members to the game and we have looked at how this is done in other clubs.  The most effective is a one-on-one session with the professional.  Cost implications of this would usually mean the court costs plus the professional's lesson fee.  From now, all introductory sessions will need to cover the court costs only with the professional's fee being waived.  Also, new players do not have to join immediately.  We are quite happy that they have a few trial games before
deciding whether they are interested in the game.  If you know of anyone who may be interested pass their contact details to Paul and he will phone them to arrange an intro session.

Summer Handicap Cup

The draw for the summer handicap cup has been done with 64 participants. This is a knockout competition with deadline dates for each round.  Please
check the draw in the dedans and arrange your matches as soon as possible. Deadline date for the first round to be played is June 22nd.  Everyone who is likely to be here throughout the summer has been added to the draw unless they have specifically asked not to be entered.  However, I am already aware of a couple of people who have been accidentally ommitted.  If you are in the draw and can't or do not want to play please let Paul or Simon know and
they will replace you with a reserve player (if you want to be on the
reserve list let us know).  The rules are below the draw.

Three members helped with the draw by picking names out of a hat.  Some of
the interesting games include:

Sam Turner v Ben Turner
Chris Gerber v Caroline Gosnay
Diana Halbert v Martin Kellaway
Michael Raven v Simon Johnston

Changing rooms

The "benches" in the changing rooms were always meant to be a temporary measure but due to their lack of strength they will be replaced in the next 2 weeks.  In the meantime please try and sit somewhere in the vicinity of the legs to avoid those unpleasant creaking and occasional cracking sounds.

Thanks to Brewin Dolphin for continuing to be the main club sponsor.
Particular thanks to Richard MacAlister & John Duns.

Leagues

A few months ago I got rid of the leagues and started the ladder system.
The reason for this was that the mid to lower leagues didn't appear to be
working very well.  However, having made the changes I think I made a
mistake and the leagues are a good way for everyone to play different
people.  We will be returning to leagues in April.  They will be monthly
leagues with 4 people in each league.

As some members will not be interested, if you would like to play in the
leagues from April will you please let us know or sign up on the sheet in
the dedans.

The Floor

In recent months I have noticed that the floor has sustained more damage
than normal.  A lot of the damage is natural wear and tear.  However, a
certain amount is caused by grit getting on the court.  Although some of
this comes down from the roof on windy days, the rest is brought in on
shoes.  Please make sure you wear clean shoes when playing and the floor
will last a little longer.  When mud is brought in the floor becomes very
slippy so please have some thought for those who have to play after you.

New members

As always we are looking for new members.  A few people have asked me about
the intro sessions.  I have stopped these as they are less effective than
one to ones.  Having said that, if anyone has a few people they would like
to introduce to the game at the same time I am happy to arrange this at a
time to suit.  The one to ones are free so if you have anyone who may be
interested let me know and I will contact them.

New Racquets

The new Jesmond Dene racquets have finally arrived.  They are available in
standard and extra-tec versions.

The club racquets that we provide for prospective and new members are
beginning to show the wear and tear of overuse.  It is hoped that members
will have their own racquet within a reasonable period of time so the club
racquets can continue to be available for new members.

Membership renewal

It is that time again.  It is hoped that annual subs will be paid by April
1st which is the start of the membership year.

Other news

Congratulations to James & Michelle Mackie (Temple) who are expecting their
first child.  Another future member.

A few people have commented on the number of bags etc left in the dedans.
Could all members please leave bags, coats, shoes etc in the changing rooms
when they are playing.

The cupboard in the men's changing rooms has gone.  If you kept your shoes
in there they are now on top of the cupboard in the corridor.  Unfortunately
there is nowhere to leave them here so could you please take them home with
you.

February

Club championship doubles

Six teams entered the level doubles championship.  Richard MacAlister and
Michael Raven were looking strong in the morning but were beaten in the
semis by John Duns and Gordon Reed.  An excuse of a large Mac'lunch with
wine was ignored although Michael was seen walking off shaking his head.  In
the other semi Chris Gerber & Brandon Gilhooley beat Martin Kellaway & Paul
Reading.

Chris & Brandon targeted Gordon in the final and, although he fought well
the continual barrage was too much for him.  John changed tactics but by
then it was too late and Chris & Brandon won 10-4.

Club Handicap doubles

24 players, 12 teams, lots of inexperience and a few people with hopes of
doing well.  Teams were split into 3 groups with only one team certain of
getting through.  This is a hard format where winning the first match
becomes very significant.  Handicaps varied between 35 & 67.

In the second game in group 1 disaster struck.  The fancied pairing of Diana
Halbert & Jane Hayes were sidelined by an injury to Diana.  Simon bravely
stepped in but his handicap was too low and they suffered.  Gordon
Stanger-Leathes & Peter Gordon (67) won all their games easily.  League 2
was much tighter with 3 pairs recording 2 wins each.  Harvey Bower & Nick
Morrison went through on games difference which was tough on Keith Anderson
& Tony Harrison and Tim Pearson & Sam Turner.

Group 3 included the champions of the last 2 years, Chris Banthorpe & Ben
Stothard, the young guns, Ben Turner & James Penn, national father & son
finalists Paul & Michael Raven and the doubles virgins Ted Baty & Roland
Airey.  The virgins were not experienced enough, the father was carrying an
injury and the son was off form.  The young guns played steadily and upset
the champions 6-5.  However, the champions games difference sent them
through as best runner-up.

Gordon & Peter were favourites to beat last years runners-up Harvey & Nick
but at 7-7 it could have gone either way but Harvey & Nick scraped through.
The second semi was a re-match.  This time the young guns were even more
solid and the lack of mistakes was too much for the champs.

James & Ben continued their strong partnership with some excellent
retrieving from Ben and solid volleying from James.  Harvey & Nick, with a
full complement of family support screaming from the dedans (or was that
just the baby?), seemed to lose all the important points and lost 10-5.

Check the website for the full results.

Simon's holidays

Simon is on holiday for far too long from Feb 6th to the end of the month.
He has said he will miss you all and will probably email regularly for news.
This means that there will be a lot more time when there will be nobody here
and, more importantly, nobody to cover if someone doesn't turn up.  I tend
to start early and finish early'ish but will make sure I am here for a few
more evenings.  I will also be popping in during weekends and can access the
answer machine from home.

So, I may be sending a few more reminder emails and texts.  Please try and
give me as much notice as possible if you can't play when you are booked.

Club racquets

In June & July last year we begged and acquired a number of racquets for the
club.  These are mainly to have available for potential new members.  These
racquets have been used a lot more than anticipated and are beginning to
break and need repairs.  The committee has agreed that members without their
own racquets will now be able to hire these racquets for £5 per hour.  This
charge will cover the wear and tear and ensure that club racquets will
always be available to potential new members.

Can I also remind everyone that all the racquets in the corridor belong to
members.  These are not club racquets.  The decorator has now reached this
area so it is likely that racquets will be in a different place although he
will try to replace as found.

Practice Courts

A number of people have asked about practice courts.  If there is a free
court and you book on the day you will only be charged for half the court
fee if you are practising alone.  If you come along and there is nobody here
write your name and "practice" on the sheet.

Membership

>From this year it will be possible to pay annual membership by monthly
standing order instead of in one lump sum.  This year the membership,
starting April 1st, is £170 plus a £20 T&RA Affiliation fee which we pay on
your behalf.  If you want to pay monthly please let Paul or Simon know
during February.  You can set up a standing order through online banking
(using your name as reference) or ask us for a s/o form which we have at the
club or can email to you.

Our sort code is 40-34-18 and acc no is 31330527.

Upcoming Competitions

The next competition is not until April so plenty of time to practice.  The
Williamson's Handicap Singles is usually one of the busier tournaments.
There is space for 32 players and group matches will be taking place on the
Wednesday through to Saturday 4th April.  The semis and finals will be on
the afternoon of Sunday April 5th.  The sign-up sheet will be going up at
the beginning of March but if you would like to pre-book your place let us
know by email.

New racquets

The new Jesmond racquets will be arriving in the next 2 weeks.  This will be
available in standard and extratec and will cost £10-£15 more than the
normal Grays racquets.  I have negotiated a 10% discount for all racquets so
the prices have gone down a small amount to reflect this discount.

Racquets (as clothing) must be paid for separately.  Cheques made payable to
me (cash also accepted).

Info about racquets

The 3 main types of racquets are standard, demi-tec and extra-tec.  The
latter two have extra stregthening so the racquets last longer and can keep
their shape better over a long period.  If you are a hard hitter I would
always advise the strengthened racquets but the standards are fine for a lot
of players.

One of the major problems is the potential damage to a worn racquet when it
needs restringing.  A damaged racquet can easily warp after restringing but
it is impossible to tell whether this will happen.  The strengthened ones
are less prone to this than the standard ones.

In my past life I was a very hard hitter (on strings and the frame) and used
to get through one extratec every 12-18 months.  Many of the racquets at the
club last between 2 and 5 years with the average probably being in the
region of 2-3 years.  With fear of being held to such a statement this is
for information purposes only and one badly hit shot on the top of the frame
could break a racquet, regardless of age.

There is another racquet supplier and I recently received 4 of these Harris
racquets for the University club.  All I can say is that it was hardly worth
the effort of stringing them as 3 broke within 4 weeks and the fourth has
just managed to survive until now.  These racquets are about £10 cheaper
than Grays but are of such poor quality that I will never buy any.  I would
also question whether there is space in the market for two manufacturers and
it would be a shame to threaten the future of the Grays factory in Cambridge
by using inferior racquets made overseas.

January

Happy New Year to you all.

Upcoming Events

Jan 18th:  Club Championship doubles.  For those with a handicap of 35 or
less.  Format to be decided depending on numbers.  To ensure the two best
doubles players can't play together the pairings will be chosen by the pro.

Jan 24th & 25th:  Handicap doubles championship.  Open to all.  You can
choose your own partner or one can be found for you.  Places are limited to
12 pairs, split into 3 groups (Sat am, sat pm, sun am).  Semis and finals
will be played on Sunday afternoon.  Please add your name to the list in the
dedans or let us know by phone or email.

Feb 8th & 9th:  Match v Prested Hall (away) for players with handicaps over
55.

Leagues

I have been keeping an eye on the leagues over the last few months and have
decided that it is time for a change.  One of the main problems with the
leagues is matching up players with similar preferred playing times.
Another is that those promoted or relegated may find themselves in a league
with large handicap discrepancies and playing off level is imperfect.

I am introducing a ladder system to run for the rest of the season (unless
it is an unmitigated disaster).  The membership will be split into 4 ladders
and the winners of each ladder will play a semi-final and final in the
summer to determine the ladder champion of the year (perhaps we could find a
better title than this).

The games will be played off handicap (although the 2 players can decide to
play off level if they both agree).  The aim will be to accumulate points
with 3 points for a win, 2 for a draw and 1 for a loss.

There will be about 15 players in each ladder so the choice of opponents is
much greater than the leagues.  However, I don't see why inter-ladder games
can't count with both players being able to accumulate points.  This will be
especially useful for those who may be the lowest or the highest
handicappers in their ladder.  You can decide beforehand whether the game
will count as a ladder match.  All ladder results will be put into the
online handicap system.

The ladder will be updated on a weekly & monthly basis so everyone can see
the total points score.

I hope that this will prove competitive, successful and interesting for all
involved.  If it does not we can revert back to a league system in the
summer or next season.

Doubles

As many of you know I am a great advocate of doubles and prefer this version
of the game over singles.  We still have very little doubles being played
outside of competitions and I would like to encourage regular doubles.

Sunday 10-12.  A couple of 45-50 ish handicappers have shown interest in
playing regularly at this time.  They need another 2-4 players to make up a
group (you don't need to be able to play every week).  Let me know if you
are interested in this.

Saturday 3-5.  This could be a good time for another regular doubles game.
If you are interested in this let me know.

I would also like to start one or two groups of doubles during the week for
those who are fortunate enough to be retired.  Proposed times are 9-11 on
Monday or Tuesday & 2-4 on Monday or Thursday.  If you think 2 hours is too
much let me know and we can start a hourly group.

Decorating

The decorating will continue in earnest and should be completed over the
next 2-3 weeks.  The main work will be in the corridors so apologies for the
disturbance but I think it'll be worth it when it is finished.

Towels, balls etc.

We appear to be losing both towels and balls in small numbers.  It is very
easy for both to be taken accidentally in pockets or bags.  Any returns
would be greatly appreciated.

New members

I would like to welcome the following new members who have joined over the
last few months:  Rachel Bailey, David Chappell, Richard Breakey, Ted Baty,
Nigel Penna & Nick Thompson.

Thanks to all of you who have introduced new and potential members.  A
special mention must go to Gordon Reed who organised a group of 12 friends
to come down in December.  He took them all on court during a 4 hour session
and a number of them are keen to come down for an individual intro session.

The Newcastle University Real Tennis Club is up and running with 13 regular
players and a few on the periphery.  Thanks to Jamie Bingham and Oscar
Johnson for their hard work setting this up.

The club still needs another 20 regular playing members.  The intro evenings
haven't been a great success so now I am doing free, one on one introductory
sessions at times to suit the interested party.  If you know of anyone who
may be interested in trying the game please let me know and I will contact
them.

December

Upcoming events

Rington's Handicap Singles Championship

The Rington's Handicap Singles Championship starts this evening.  The group
matches take place up to midday on Sunday and the Quarters, semis and finals
will be after that.  You are invited to come and watch the final rounds on
Sunday afternoon with the final being played about 3.30pm.

********** We have one space left in the Sunday morning group starting at
9.30 so if you can play contact Paul or Simon as soon as possible *********

Club Championship

Wearing socks as gloves and several layers of clothes I have just marked a
fantastic semi-final between Richard MacAlister and Chris Gerber.  The
standard of play was exceptional and I think it's fair to say either player
could have won the match after the first two sets were shared, both 6-5.
Richard proved the stronger and won 6-3 in the 3rd.  He will play the winner
of John Duns and Brandon Gilhooley who play on Friday at 1pm.

The final will be after the Rington's handicap final on Sunday at about 4 -
4.30pm.  All support welcome.

Christmas Handicap Doubles

A one day tournament to be held on Sunday, December 28th.  There will be 2
groups of four teams.  The seconf group is full but there are plenty of
places in the first group starting at 10am.  Just let us know that you would
like to play and we will find you a partner.

Brodie Cup

The team beat Moreton Morrell 5-0 (a little unkind to Moreton) to
successfully start their quest for a 3rd successive final.  They have
Canford (away) on Sunday 14th.

Prested Hall Match

There is an away match v Prested Hall on February 7th & 8th.  This is for
players with handicaps over 50.  There are a couple of places left so let us
know if you would like to play.

Doubles over Christmas

I would like to use the Christmas period to arrange a few doubles matches.
Each game will be a couple of hours and played off handicap.  Pairings will
be of similar handicaps.  If you have never played doubles this would be a
great opportunity to start.  It is good fun for all standards.  If you would
like to play sign up in the dedans and mark down your availability so I can
match up teams.

Lost Property

The cupboard in the men's changing room is full of lost property, abandoned
gear and some shoes belonging to members.  As this cupboard is falling to
bits it will be removed in the near future so could you have a look and
remove any gear belonging to you.

Clothing

The new clothing has arrived.  I have polo shirts, t-shirts, shorts and
rugby shirts all with the new logo.  The polos and t-shirts are proper
sports gear which does not hold the sweat like normal material.  They are
very good to play in but some people don't like the "feel" of the material
so I will order some ordinary tops as well.  The rugby tops are normal
material.

All the new clothing make excellent Christmas presents if your nearest and
dearest need help with ideas.

Racquets

I have ordered the new Jesmond Dene racquets (to replace the green ones)
with the new logo.  They will be designed in a similar way to the T&RA
Centenary racquets with Jesmond colours.  Unfortunately they won't be ready
until the end of January but can still make lovely Christmas presents.  The
new ones that I have ordered are extra-tecs as these seem to be the most
popular type of racquets.

Other News

I am away at the Browning Cup at Holyport next week and have the pleasure of
playing Peter Paterson in the first round of the professionals handicap
tournament.  If you see me on Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning you'll
be able to guess the result.  I was hoping to have a chance of playing Rob
Fahey but the final is the only possibility and my expectations are not that
high.

November

1. Stop Press

Martin Kellaway has one spare adult and one Under 18 ticket for the rugby at
Murrayfield on Saturday (Nov 8th).  Kick off 5.15.  He is going so he can
even offer a lift.  Ring here if you are interested.

2. What's On

Nov 30th - Match v Old Rugbeians.  Still looking for 3 players with
handicaps of:

under 40 to play me
between 43-57 to play Angus Crichton-Miller
between 52-66 to play James Talks

Each player will play a singles and a doubles.  Lunch will be provided and
one of the OR's will be bringing a selection of wines.

Dec 3-7th - Rington's Club Handicap Singles

A maximum of 32 players for the club championship.  Only 13 places left so
get your name down asap.  Ring or see the sign-up sheet in the dedans.

3. Decorating

The club is being painted as I write.  This will be on-going for several
weeks.  The corridors will have to be painted while people are playing so I
hope it is not too distracting for you.  Sorry for the inconvenience but
hopefully it will all be worth it.

4.  Leagues

I have attached the new leagues for November & December.  If you are not in
the leagues and wish to play let us know.

5. Introductory evenings

There are two intro sessions in November - 13th & 27th from 7pm - 9pm.  If
you know of anyone who may be interested why not bring them down for a free
taster.  Thanks to David Rowe and David Hughes who brought friends in
October.

6.  Match Managers

I am hoping to arrange a few more matches, home and away, with other clubs.
However, to do this effectively I need people who are able to be match
managers.  It doesn't take a great deal of time but is more efficient the
current system.  If you are willing to offer any help can you let Simon or
me know and when we have a list of matches we can try and offer a choice of
dates.

October

Intro evening

This months intro evening is on Thursday 16th from 7pm-9pm.  This is an
opportunity for friends, family or work colleagues to come and try the game
for free.  If you can think of anyone who may be interested please invite
them (and let me know) or let me know and I can ring them.

Universities

Newcastle University Real Tennis Club appears to be up and running.  Jamie
Bingham has put in a lot of effort to collect 90 email addresses at freshers
fayre and organise intro sessions .  We had 26 students in last week for
intro sessions and I hope that a number will become full student members.
I'm sure a few of you will be playing one or two of them in the next few
weeks and months.  The University will be taking up a regular spot on Sunday
evening for the next month (or possibly every Sunday during term) and I hope
that it will prove successful.

Dedans

There have been a few changes in the dedans and I hope they have been for
the better.  I would like to thank Ramy Zack for donating the new reception
unit/office structure.  He also organised for two of his lads to dismantle,
deliver and reassemble the unit which was very generous.

There have been a number of other changes so thank you for your patience
while this has been going on.

AGM

This years AGM will be at 7pm on October 30th.  All members are welcome to
attend but please can you let us or the committee know if you will be
attending so we can organise seating.

Upcoming events

Sunday Nov 30th - Match v Old Rugbeians.  If you are interested in playing
against the Old Rugbeians in a singles and doubles type format please let me
know.

Match v Prested Hall (A) on the weekend of February 7th 2009.  This match
will be for players with a handicap between 60-79.  We are still looking for
2-3 more players to make up a team of 7.  The format will be singles and
doubles played on Saturday and Sunday.  Jane Hayes has agreed to be team
manager so let her know if you are interested in going.

Rackets

There are a great number of rackets that are permanently left at the club.
I think a number of these will be the property of past members, Universities
and, perhaps, unwanted rackets.  I would like to convert the unattached
rackets into club rackets as the current ones are past their best.

I have changed the racket space into two separate areas.  Could all members
move their own rackets to the left hand side of the area during October and
the rackets that are not moved will be classed as unclaimed.  With these I
will make further enquiries (initials) and by the end of October the only
rackets left should belong to current playing members.  I know that people
tend to know where they leave their rackets so I will not move any rackets
yet but at some point some rackets will have to be moved as the space on the
left grows and the space on the right shrinks.

Thanks for your help with this.
