A second successive victory for the excellent pair Simon Long and Marcus Campbell, was achieved at the expense of veteran pair Richard MacAlister and John Duns
It could have been so different had Long and Campbell, not made a remarkable recovery from 1/5 down to Phil Ansell and Peter Scott in their morning match. They went on to beat John Taylor and Richard Sanderson and qualified as runners up in Group A after a 6/2 loss to MacAlister and Duns.
In the afternoon Group Simon Johnston and Andrew Marwick won the group and consequently faced Long and Campbell in the Semi-final – the latter played aggressively and well to win the match 6/2.
Darren Spurling (returning after an ankle op) played some good tennis with Duncan Edwards in the other Semi-Final, but couldn’t counter the strong work at the net by MacAlister who sealed the match with a dedans strike.
The Final was to 8 games.
For the majority of the match a story of great serving and strong returning. MacAlister and Duns were conceding a handicap of 15 owe 15 in odd games, 15 owe 30 in even. The latter handicap proved crucial as Long took advantage with 3 crucial dedans shots. Two at 40 all!
It reached 5/5 before Long and Campbell pulled away to win 8/5.
